Prefect Job Description

Text Box: “learning, growing, belonging … happy together in God’s family”

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School we believe children need to experience responsibility in order to help them play an active role as good citizens.

We believe our Prefects will have a very important role to play in the day to day organisation of our school, and as only Year 6 children are permitted to apply, it will be considered a prestigious position.

Children who believe they have the appropriate skills and qualities will get the opportunity to present to staff why they think they would make a suitable Prefect.

Prefects are expected to set a good example at all times in their behaviour, the respect they show others, and their school uniform. In addition they should carry out their duties with fairness.

Prefects are guided by the Deputy Head Teacher.

A Prefect’s main duties include:

  • to encourage the Christian values of love, care and respect
  • to be a role model for other children, to lead by example and to wear the school uniform correctly and with pride
  • to work with Mrs Riches to promote good behaviour, manners, politeness and to assist in helping the school run effectively
  • to be punctual and well prepared for their tasks
  • to support the dinner staff and all who work in the school for the benefit of the children
  • to act as additional pairs of eyes at break times and lunchtimes and to report to staff serious misbehaviour
  • to help prepare the hall for assembly
  • to help provide a happy and safe environment in which all members of the school community feel valued
  • to work to prevent and report bullying and discrimination

  • to act as friends and buddies for those who need support
  • to patrol the school corridors and playgrounds at break times and lunchtimes in order to assist in preventing any lack of respect for persons and property
  • to ensure the ICT Suite is kept tidy
  • to support infant classes during wet play
  • to help cover the school office when necessary
  • to carry out other tasks and jobs as may be directed from time to time by staff

Prefects represent the school and its values and may be asked to attend both public and school events.

Prefects will meet half termly for guidance, support and for an opportunity to share their experiences.

Prefects must understand they can be replaced if, in the judgement of the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher, they are not fulfilling their roles effectively and in accordance with this job description and outline of duties.

 Who are this year’s Prefects?

Prefects for this academic year are displayed on the notice board in the main entrance area.

Would you like to be a Prefect in the future?

We hope that being a Prefect is something you will aim towards as you progress through our school. It is a great opportunity to work as a team and to contribute to our school community.

If this is something you would like to do in Year 6 then remember to follow our school rules, wear your uniform well, have a good attitude to learning and always show good manners and have respect for our school community.  GOOD LUCK
